Popular Photography names Lightroom Imaging Software of the Year

Like Apple’s Aperture, last year’s most impressive software, Lightroom organizes, processes, fixes, prints, and shares your images — handling RAW-format shots just like any other kind of file. It does all its fixing non-destructively, allowing you to go back and rework your pictures again and again.

VMware Fusion Is Latest Way For Macs to Operate Windows, PC Software

VMware Fusion Is Latest Way For Macs to Operate Windows, PC Software

I’ve been testing Fusion, and I’ve found it works well. For instance, as I write this column on a Mac laptop using the Mac version of Microsoft Word, Fusion is allowing me to simultaneously run several popular Windows programs — Microsoft Outlook, Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. Each is running in its own window, just as if it were a native Mac program. I can switch from one to the other rapidly and smoothly. Their icons show up on the Mac’s “Dock,” just like the icons for Mac programs.

In my tests, Fusion never slowed down my MacBook Pro laptop or two other Macs on which I tested it. As I write this, the Mac version of Word and all three Windows programs are performing normally, even though I am also running five other Mac programs. My MacBook Pro, which isn’t the latest or most powerful model, has two gigabytes of memory and an Intel processor that is a generation behind the current model.

Mac OS or Windows? The Great After Effects CS3 Smackdown

Mac OS or Windows? The Great After Effects CS3 Smackdown

There are many, many reasons to love Intel Macs, but the one I’m going to focus on today is Boot Camp. Being able to run a full copy of Windows natively on the exact same hardware as Mac OS X not only represents a 2-for-1 bang for your buck when it comes to buying a production rig, but also gives average Joes such as yours truly the opportunity to compare apples to apples (so to speak) when running cross-platform software. And with After Effects CS3 finally out in the wild (and in Intel Mac-native form, no less), it’s time to see how well the Mac and Windows versions of AE do on identical hardware.

How do I open a PDF in Acrobat instead of the browser?

How do I open a PDF in Acrobat instead of the browser?

By default, PDF files opened from a web page display inside the browser window with a limited toolbar:The default behavior does not suit the needs of all legal users. Some eFiling sites require running in the browser, but other applications require opening the PDF directly in Acrobat.

It is easy to change the way that Acrobat opens files from the browser by modifying Preferences.

Read on to learn how to change Preferences.

I’ll also tell you about a very useful Firefox extension that let’s you choose— on the fly— whether you would like a PDF to open in the browser or in Acrobat.

Swimming with the Fishes

But wait, there’s more! According to Adobe, the next version of Flash — Flash 9 — will ship with dramatically expanded codec options allowing significantly better and faster video.

There was a time not long ago when expanded Flash codec choices wouldn’t have mattered. Streaming video had already failed and the market was moving to downloaded video where data rates and total file size were less immediately relevant. Then came YouTube and its commitment to Flash video. Now video streaming is again a hot idea and Flash 8’s choices of the H.263 or VP6 codecs just aren’t enough. Most implementations of H.263 are limited to 320-by-240, and VP6, though very efficient, just isn’t a mainstream technology. In that respect it is like Essential Viewing’s codec.

But the next version of Flash video will support H.264, AAC audio, most HD frame sizes, and — here’s the most important part of all — will work with your graphics card to make it all run faster and with less CPU load.

Running Windows Vista on a Mac

If you install Boot Camp on a well-equipped Mac model, it can become a blazing fast Vista computer. A few days ago I bought a top-of-the-line model of Apple’s new iMac line, and installed Boot Camp and Vista. I then tested the machine using Vista’s built-in Windows Experience Index, a rating system that goes from 1 to 5.9, with scores above 3.0 generally required for full, quick performance. My iMac scored a 5.0, the best score of any consumer Vista machine I have tested. Obviously, a tricked-out high end Dell or HP box might do as well or better, and a lesser Mac might do worse. But the score was very impressive for a computer that wasn’t designed with Vista in mind.

Anime Studio – IK Animation for Vector Illustrations

E-Frontier’s Anime Studio

At Siggraph 2007, E-Frontier demonstrated several pieces of software, including Anime Studio, a very dynamic vector based animation system. More than merely a vector based animation system, the software also supports a 3D camera system and 3D object import. Of particular interest to me is the fact that Anime Studio allows animators to use bone IK systems in their vector animations.
