Spinning Gears – Trek Bikes
Lynn and a team of about 15 designers create most of the basic Project One designs at Trek’s home base in Waterloo, Wisconsin. They also crank out the graphics seen on every stock Trek bike (including Trek-owned brands Klein, LeMond and Gary Fisher), every Team Trek jersey and helmet, and many Trek-related websites, brochures and dealer catalogs. It’s enough work to make even Lance Armstrong exhausted. Still, the team gets it all done, pushing through project after project with MacBook Pros running Adobe Creative Suite.
Every designer on the team sports a single 17-inch MacBook Pro linked to a network. Their main tools are Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but the team often has to crack open 3D documents from the engineering team. To do it, Lynn runs Parallels and Microsoft Windows. “I used to have a PC desktop box sitting under my machine, just for 3D stuff,” he says. “I’d have to fire up the PC, make translations, spend a bunch of time getting the files into a form that could work on the Mac. Now I run Parallels and a program called Rhinoceros in Windows. It’s the can opener of the 3D world. I can open a bunch of different files from our engineering group and save them to my MacBook Pro.”
CS3 – Invitation from Adobe
A new era in creative expression is about to unfold, freeing us to color outside the lines, to think in multiple dimensions, to engage audiences like never before.
On March 27, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time, Adobe Systems will host a webcast of the official launch of Adobe® Creative Suite® 3, live from New York City. To participate, bookmark this page and join us back here on March 27.
Encode Flash Video and drop into Dreamweaver
Web developers have struggled to find the best way to disseminate video on their sites. They’ve shared the same horrid experience of a client delivering a 45-minute, double-digit megabyte file with orders to just post it. What consumer has the patience to wait for such a large file to download? And what developer doesn’t find this a waste of time?
But the integration of web-based video has come a long way. And with the inclusion of the Flash® Video 8 Encoder and its seamless amalgamation with Dreamweaver®, even web developers with minimal video background can successfully include web-based video on their sites. Video file formats such as AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG, and WMV can all be converted to FLV files, which are viewable on most operating systems and web browsers via Flash Player 6 or later.
The following tutorial explains how to take a video file, convert it to FLV, and embed it in a web page using Dreamweaver 8.
Tears for TIME

Recently TIME has undergone a redesign. For most of us, when a client we like switches ADs or Managing Editors or gets redesigned, we get anxious. Therefore, it was a pleasant and poignant surprise to hear Arthur call this week and ask me to paint a tear for the cover.
A water drop is a formula and if you need to place one on a photo in 2007, Photoshop is the answer. So I painted several tears and one was chosen and is now on the cover of the redesign, running down Reagan’s rosy cheek.
