Photoshop CS3 Beta now live on Labs

John Nack on Adobe: Photoshop CS3 Beta now live on Labs

Okay, folks–the Photoshop CS3 beta is now live on Adobe Labs, so have at it! Please note, however, that we’re experiencing some problems with the online serial number tool. Our engineers are cranking away on it, but in the meantime some valid CS2 serials are not being accepted. Sorry about the glitch, and thanks for your patience. We hope to have it resolved soon, and in the meantime you can run the beta in tryout mode if you’d like. I’m now headed over to the new CS3 beta forum on Labs to try to answer questions. –J.

Macworld: 2006 Eddy Awards – After Effects 7 Professional

Macworld: 2006 Eddy Awards – After Effects 7 Professional

With After Effects 7 Professional (4.5 mice; July 2006), Adobe released a great update to an already powerful app. The biggest improvement is in the interface. Previous editions had been bogged down by palette bloat. The new, unified interface solves that problem very nicely, with dockable and groupable panels. After Effects also now uses standard Adobe tools, palettes, menus, and customizable keyboard shortcuts, for a more familiar look-and-feel. There’s added support for higher bit depths and HDR media, and the new time-remapping features really help when you’re speeding up and slowing down clips, Matrix-style. Add more-comprehensive and easier-to-apply presets, and After Effects 7 Professional is the best update this app has seen in years.—JONATHAN SEFF

Adobe to release Intel-native Photoshop CS3 beta

MacWorld News – Adobe to release Intel-native Photoshop CS3 beta

Adobe is readying the first Intel-native release of its flagship product, Photoshop. The Intel-native version of Photoshop will be released as a beta on Friday, and will be available to all users that have a valid Creative Suite 2 serial number. While the beta has many new features, the one that will interest most Mac users is that Photoshop is being released as a Universal Binary. Photoshop CS3 beta also includes a pre-release version of a major upgrade to Adobe Bridge, as well as a preview release of the new Adobe Device Central. Hear our experts’ initial assessment in a special edition of the Macworld Podcast.

3ds max 9 review from Digital Producer

3ds Max 9 is the first release since Autodesk acquired Alias and its flagship, Maya. I’ve been wondering how the two programs will start to meld into one.  I’ve already seen it in Maya — baby steps toward uniformity. Most of the time, I take a cursory glance at a new release and if something doesn’t scream “change,” I’ll have to pull up the hood and start poking around to find the new stuff.  In the case of Max 9, even after some deep poking, I found that it doesn’t have enormous changes in the tool set.  It almost feels like a point upgrade. EXCEPT … Max 9 is available in a 64-bit form as well as 32-bit. So, if you happen to be using Windows 64 on a 64-bit processor, you will see pretty substantial speed increases simply based on the fact that the software and processor can handle larger chunks of data at one time, not to mention raising the RAM limit to 8GB. To really benefit from this upgrade, it’s going to require updating your hardware as well. But, let’s take a look at the nice new tools that are common to both 64- and 32-bit programs.

FileMaker Pro 8.5 receives Editor’s Choice from Teaching Pre K-8 Magazine

Blue Ribbon Reviews November/December 2006
By Linda Lindroth

Databases will never be the same with these technology tools for your classroomHere’s software for creating your own databases with web data input or online history databases for strengthening social studies and history standards. Either way, these will find a place in your curriculum.

FileMaker Pro 8.5
Even if you are currently a FileMaker user, you will be amazed at the new features in this powerful upgrade from FileMaker, Inc.

The most dramatic new feature is FileMaker Web Viewer. The Web Viewer control allows the user to create a database that includes web information that can be viewed within the FileMaker database. So, a class database of student names and addresses can include a street map showing where a student lives. If the student moves, just change the address in the database and the map automatically updates from the web. Students can create an animal database and link to a URL for pictures and information about the animal. Teachers will find dozens of ways to use this feature in instructional presentations as well as with student activities.

Another big addition is the FileMaker Learning Center, which users can access from the Help Menu. Get tutorials, updated information and other online resources for help with FileMaker Pro 8.5 while working within the program.

All objects in a layout can now be named, making it easier to link directly to a particular field or section. Just go to Layout Mode/View Menu/Object Info.

Thomas Hawk Buys a Mac

Thomas Hawk’s Digital Connection: Thomas Hawk Buys a Mac

And all along the way it was my 18 year old tech mentor Kristopher Tate, who kept saying, dude, just get a Mac. Just get a Mac. They just work.

And so I did. And I have to say that he’s right. It just works. It took about 48 hours of getting used to but once my little introductory awkward phase was over it just works so much better. It springs to life immediately when I open it. The new EVDO card I got works perfectly. It’s fast. The picture quality is very accurate. I can easily work in both Bridge and Photoshop at the same time on it while still having Firefox and Thunderbird and Skype and iTunes and jUploadr all open at the same time.
