“If the application is internal to the business, we would probably use Filemaker because it’s quicker to build and more flexible going forward,” Saunders says.
“If someone comes to us and doesn’t want an off-the-shelf system, they want something that suits their business and way of working which will change and evolve, Filemaker is ideal for that. We can do all that with web application, but Filemaker is quicker and richer.
Filemaker bundles up a relational database engine with tools to make it relatively easy to create graphical front ends and for users to modify it or generate reports.

FileMaker is a tool that lets you build databases: it’s been around for a long time and the latest version (10) is now available. One of FileMaker’s great strengths is that it is available for both the PC and the Mac. That’s great news for Mac users because they have, historically at least, been well served when it comes to a choice of database management systems (DBMS). It is even better news for companies that use both because FileMaker databases will run on both.
FileMaker has always had great facilities for the design of reports and forms. Pleasingly, this strength continues and is enhanced in version 10. The most obvious change is the movement of the Status toolbar to the top of the screen – it’s been clinging to its traditional position at the side of the screen for far too long. And to help you get started designing databases, there are 10 new templates to give your database a slick professional look.

To illustrate many of the new features introduced in FileMaker 10, FileMaker now offers a series of Quick Tours on its website. The tours take us through the new interface (particularly the new Status Toolbar), show us some of the new database Themes and Templates, and demonstrate Script Triggers, Save Finds, Dynamic Reports, and other features new to FileMaker 10.

As a user and as a developer, my overall first impression is favorable. It took me a little time to get used to the new status toolbar, but I’m warming up to it finally. Persistent sorting, dynamic summary reports, editable table views—these are improvements I am grateful for as a user. As for script triggers, although I keep insisting to my daughters that I am not a geek, I find script triggers pretty exciting.
