Adobe headquarters receives `green’ honor

Adobe Systems, a pioneer in desktop publishing software, has cemented its status as a pioneer in green building. On Monday, the San Jose software company became the first in the country to receive never-before-awarded three platinum certifications for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) — the highest rating awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Creating Generic Ornaments in Cinema 4D

Every year, certain holidays come around which bring up the same questions from different clients – making iconographic images that indicate the season. There are hundreds of little 3D objects that can be made quickly – in about 10 minutes, so it doesn’t seem worth the trouble of archiving and logging all of those little things. But maybe it’s time to start putting a dropbox of holiday goodies together. Here’s one.

The name’s Photoshop… Adobe Photoshop

Macworld: Editors’ Notes: The name’s Photoshop… Adobe Photoshop

And make no mistake: it’s not as if the Casino Royale screenwriters had to mention Photoshop by name. They could have easily had Mathis saying something along the lines of “It’s amazing how easily you can doctor photos these days,” or even the clunkier “It’s amazing what you can do with image-editing software these days.” But someone somewhere figured that Photoshop was such a known quality that you could mention it by name in a major motion picture slated for release around the globe without having to worry about audience members turning to one another and saying, “Huh?” It’s a pretty strong testimony to the amount of mind-share Photoshop commands—not just in the digital-imaging world, but among the population at large.

Sorenson Squeeze 4.5 Compression Suite review from Digital Producer

Sorenson Squeeze is one of the most widely used video compression suites for both Macintosh and Windows users. The company has made it a point to keep the software compatible with the latest video file formats, and version 4.5 adds some new support. Virtually every video that I put up on Digital Media Net has been compressed with Sorenson Squeeze because it outputs high quality, is very easy to use, and supports the widest video file formats.

The company has updated the suite to version 4.5, adding some new features to this already robust video compression tool. As more and more devices have the capability to play back video, the video format choices have become wider, both at the high end with Blu Ray and HD DVD, as well as at the low end with video iPods, video capable cell phones PSPs, and other multimedia playback devices. We’ll take a look at some of those new features as well as the interface in this review.

Bioarchitecture Offers a New Spin on Energy-Efficient Design

Bioarchitecture Offers a New Spin on Energy-Efficient Design

Dollens is applying botany and digital design to architecture. Software that can mimic biological processes on a computer screen dates back to the 1960s, when researchers created a program letting scientists mathematically see how an organism grows and conduct virtual experiments, such as the University of Calgary’s algorithmic botany program. Using software programs such as Xfrog.com — which also is used by film animators — Dollens created computer-generated, three-dimensional models of building trusses constructed along the lines of a pea plant’s tendril and a tumbleweed’s frame. He also designed a virtual multistoried building with rooms, balconies, and solar-panel surfaces based on the structure of a penstemmon.

Tumbletruss.com contains examples of Dennis Dollen’s work.

Pixologic Interviews Gentle Giant

Pixologic Interviews Gentle Giant

Talking to Modeling Supervisor Scott Spencer at Gentle Giant is a bit like getting a glimpse into a toy workshop that exists somewhere beyond the looking glass, and way down the rabbit hole. This is a toyshop designed for the geek, artist, visual effects afficionado, and toyfreak. All in one. I’m talking about an alternate universe that exists in a dimension between the digital effects production pipeline, the toy maker’s workshop, the most tricked out model shop you can imagine, a production facility and Peter Pan’s playroom all rolled into one.

Indeed, this is no ordinary toy manufacturer, and these are no ordinary elves. Led by a visionary owner with a child’s soul, this unique world of talented modelers, painters and artists of all kinds is using traditional and digital hardware and software — of course including ZBrush — to redefine graphics creation and the production pipeline.

Scott Spencer, lead digital sculptor, takes your infatuated Pixologic guide on a tour of his wonderland.
