In this video I have a chat with Oliver Breidenbach from Boinx Software, makers of FotoMagico, iStopMotion, PhotoPresenter, Mouseposé and one of the tools we use for our Macworld streaming setup: BoinxTV. This week at WWDC Boinx introduced Orientator for BoinxTV and LibOrientator for iOS devs. Most of the Boinx products are available in the Mac App Store as well, often in a “pro” and “home” version with pricing according to your needs.
Oliver’s team delivers a great suite of tools for animators, filmmakers, videographers and presenters. We spoke about their business and what the WWDC announcements mean to them.
Boinx products are available at an educational discount price from Creation Engine.
Jeremy reverse engineers components from a golf cart using 3D scanning and SolidWorks Simulation; then we rapid prototype sub assemblies for the buggy.
Today, we’re unveiling a totally redesigned Your World in 3D website. If you’re new to geo-modeling — the term given to creating 3D buildings for Google Earth and Google Maps — the Your World in 3D website has all the tools and info you’ll need to get up and running quickly. The new website showcases several examples of what fellow modelers are building and will help connect with other geo-modelers around the world.
So that’s the what, here’s the why. Five years ago, Google acquired a Boulder-based startup called @Last Software, which was making waves in the architectural world with their 3D modeling software, SketchUp. Google had an ambitious idea to add a 3D model of every building on the planet to Google Earth, and SketchUp was a tool up to the task. Not only that, by opening SketchUp to a wider audience, users would have the opportunity to help build a virtual mirror of their world.

When possible, technology intersects with other classes: Sixth graders studying Greek history, for example, used the Google SketchUp tool to examine ancient architecture.
Seventh graders might use the same tools in a more advanced way, perhaps using SketchUp to design their own buildings. They design video games, and they animate.
Wirecast’s performance will definitely scale well with faster computers. For example, I tested Wirecast on a Hewlett Packard 8740w mobile workstation with a 2.0 GHz four-core i7 processor (8-cores with hyper-threading enabled), which was able to produce three streams (640×480 at 732kbps, 480×360 at 432kbps and 320×240 at 232kbps) at an efficient 25% total CPU utilization. Working with a Decklink card attached to the Express Card slot of the 8740w, I was able to capture 1080i video and produce four streams at under 75% CPU utilization, which is impressive. Overall, Wirecast combines excellent overall functionality with very good output quality and efficiency. If you’re considering a software-based live encoding solution, it should definitely be on your short list.
Even better than actually having to use the tilt lens is the ability to create the exact same look in Focal Point. I revisited some of my landscapes from Italy and Paris using this technique. Here are my results from converting them to tiny landscapes in Focal Point.
