Where MindManager 9 steps out in front is with its advanced business features, in particular its integration with Microsoft Office 2010. The first sign of this is its toolbar, which looks identical in style to Office 2010’s ribbon, right down to the backstage view, found under the File tab at the top left. This gives access to recent files and locations, print previews and so on. The familiar UI makes MindManager easy to get to grips with, but it isn’t here where the real power lies, it’s with the Microsoft Office, Outlook and Sharepoint integration.

MindManager 8 for Mac now integrates with native Mac software, including iCal, Address Book, and iWork. The new iCal integration easily lets users track To Do lists and multiple calendars.

Mindjet features standard Apple gesture support on the multitouch Trackpad, allowing users “pinch and expand” to zoom in on the map. New Magic Mouse support enables “three finger roll” for scrolling through the map.

Users can also publish maps in social media networks such as Facebook and MySpace and export maps in PDF or Flash format using Mindjet Player.

One of the many secrets behind Australia’s Defence Force could well be the mind mapping software that underpins many of its projects.

Logistic Engineering Services (LES), which provides training and services primarily to Australia’s Defence Force, relies heavily on Mindjet MindManager software to help it deliver projects on time and in budget.

LES senior consultant and training manager, Shane Layt, turned to Mindjet MindManager software 12 years ago and now half of his 35 colleagues have done likewise. Layt says the software results in a 30 to 60 per cent productivity increase and greatly encourages creativity, collaboration and brainstorming.

Mind maps solve all these problems. I can capture ideas from an interview or a design for a book in a mind map, and I don’t feel frustrated or fatigued. Going from a linear view to two-dimensional space allows me to move around quickly and put an idea in the right place in the hierarchy by sailing right there with my mouse, expanding and contracting the level of detail as needed. Because this is quick and easy, I capture more ideas and restructure them faster, meaning my mind map better reflects my understanding.

When I return to a mind map, the context of my latest thinking is quickly restored; nothing is missing or lost. I don’t get that feeling of dread. Mind maps can be large and complex, and to control the depth, you expand or contract branches. I often use mind maps to organize and analyze information stored somewhere else, like all of the opportunities I am working on in Salesforce.com.

I use MindJet MindManager, which has a shareable version of maps called MindJet Connect. Shareable mind maps can be viewed and changed by many people at once. It is a wonderful feeling to work quickly on a shareable space to capture ideas and trade thoughts. Free Mind is a popular open-source mind-mapping tool (a step down in usability from MindManager, but it will give you the idea), and many other commercial and open-source tools are available as well.
