Photoshopped or Not? A Tool to Tell

Photoshopped or Not

Dr. Farid said he became intrigued by the problem after reading about the photo-labeling proposals in Europe. Categorizing photos as either altered or not altered seemed too blunt an approach, he said.

Dr. Farid and Eric Kee, a Ph.D. student in computer science at Dartmouth, are proposing a software tool for measuring how much fashion and beauty photos have been altered, a 1-to-5 scale that distinguishes the infinitesimal from the fantastic. Their research is being published this week in a scholarly journal, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Basic image editing with Adobe Photoshop CS5
I’m not a professional photographer, and I have no aspirations to be. Like many people, I use my phone for the majority of the shots I take. That’s what inspired me to write this article on basic image editing. We all experience similar problems with our photos, and for those moments that deserve more than the camera delivered, we can turn to Adobe Photoshop to quickly bring dull images back to life.

Sorenson Squeeze 8 Review

Sorenson Squeeze 8 Review via Andrew Gormley

A program I used quite often when I first started video editing was Sorenson Squeeze. It offered way more output formats than Final Cut Pro at the time and had a wide selection of presets to choose from, which made it easy for a novice to output great looking video. I recently looked into Squeeze 7 because it offered a quick and efficient way to export WebM video, but was turned off by the $799 price tag. This week Sorenson released Squeeze 8 ($599) with an updated encoding engine and a Lite version ($199). I set out to see if this was the right encoder for the job.

Am I going to purchase Squeeze 8 Lite? Yes, despite some interface nitpicks and an encoding process that requires just a little more fine tuning to keep it in line with the source material, it delivers reliable results and thus far is the only WebM encoder that hasn’t made me want to rip my hair out.
