Every week, two million people use SketchUp to breathe life into their ideas. The resulting 3D models get made into houses and schools, movie sets and aquariums, bridges, robots, and furniture. The sum total of all this work represents a larger, yet untold story of how the SketchUp community is profoundly shaping the world around us.
Well, it’s time for all you unsung SketchUp heroes to stand up and take a bow, so today, we’re kicking off the Make Ideas Real project. The result of this initiative will be an innovative, online showcase that does justice to the impact SketchUp users are having on the physical world.
A client asked us what Khan Academy uses to make his videos, and this is answered in his FAQ:
What equipment do you use to make your videos?
I use Camtasia Recorder ($200) + SmoothDraw3(Free) + a Wacom Bamboo Tablet ($80) on a PC. I used to use ScreenVideoRecorder($20) and Microsoft Paint (Free).
The Alien Skin Snap Art 3 plug-in allows you to take a photo and turn it into a piece of art generally much more interesting than the photo itself. Not always, though; if you take enough pictures, you’ll soon see which ones are amenable to being redisplayed as art.
The default oil painting settings tend to look a little Edward Hopper-esque but can easily be turned into Van Gogh-like paintings and everything in between. While it might be theoretically possible to come close to these effects with bare-bones Photoshop, I personally cannot image doing it. It would take months to figure it out.
I decided when we started this adventure on October 14th that we’d have to take a shotgun approach to tape restoration, so that’s what we have done, using three completely separate approaches in parallel.
First the folks at Red Giant Software up in Portland, Oregon helped us use their plugins for Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. We first thought we’d be using just Red Giant’s Instant HD tool from their Magic Bullet Suite, but soon learned they have separate tools for every stage of the process including de-interlacing, de-noising, color correction and more.
