Toon Boom Animate 2 Review

Link via Digital Arts

Toon Boom Animate 2Beyond the usual performance enhancements and bug fixes, the primary new features of version 2 include the smart puppet feature which supports forward and inverse kinematics, making it easier to animate a complete character than before. Lip syncing is also available, with an automatic phoneme recognition tool – useful for quick animations, but not 100 per cent reliable by any stretch.

Additional effects and blending modes have been added, allowing output that would have previously required exporting to the likes of After Effects. The obligatory 3D support is here and cameras can also now be attached to objects in the 3D world, allowing interesting new perspectives.

Toon Boom Animate 2 is available at an educational discount price of $270 (download version).

Adobe Photoshop for tablets looms nearer

iPad Photoshop

You can’t download Photoshop for your iPad yet, but the technology is getting close enough for Adobe Systems to begin showing what it’s got in mind.

Yesterday, John Nack, the Adobe Systems program manager leading the effort, revealed some ideas of how Adobe envisions marrying its flagship image-editing software to tablet computers.

Adobe displayed two broad possibilities in mock-ups and a presentation at the Adobe Max conference: first, a direct editing application for tablets that’s operated with a multitouch user interface, and second, a companion application that would let a mobile device augment Photoshop running on an ordinary computer.

Adobe CS5: 64-bit, CUDA-Accelerated, And Threaded Performance : How Should You Accelerate Adobe?

Link via Tom’s Hardware

Creative Suite 5 Production PremiumOur original question was how best to accelerate Adobe’s Creative Suite. In After Effects, the move from CS4 to CS5 was a clear win, while scaling from four cores to six offered surprisingly little benefit. Photoshop CS5 is likewise mushy on its core scaling benefits, but if you can land a plug-in that supports CUDA, baby, hold on—the improvement is massive. Most of all, Premiere Pro performs exactly as we’d expect. The video editor scales well as threads increase, improves with Hyper-Threading, makes good use of the jump to CS5, and runs CUDA like nobody’s business in the Mercury Playback Engine. If Premiere Pro is your life, it’ll make good use of every improvement you can throw at it.

After Effects CS5, Premiere Pro CS5, and Photoshop CS5 Extended are all included in Creative Suite 5 Production Premium for Students & Teachers for $448 .

Software Review: HDR Efex Pro from Nik Software

Link via Blogcritics Sci/Tech

HDR Efex ProHDR Efex Pro is a brand new product from Nik Software. It is a High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging tool that gives you the full gamut of photographic possibilities, from artistic to realistic HDR images. The goal of HDR Efex Pro is to give you everything you need to create high quality high dynamic range images.

HDR photography is a process in which multiple exposures of the same scene are captured using various levels of exposure and then they are aligned and merged to generate a single image that enables a much wider range of colors and tonality. HDR techniques are typically used to enhance landscape, architectural, nighttime, and artistic photography.

HDR Efex Pro is very easy to use and provides really remarkable results. The interface is very logically laid out with the presets and previews on the left and the controls on the right. For those who are just getting started, choosing a preset is probably the best way and then from there experimenting with the controls to see how each one affects an image. If you like a look, you can save it as a custom preset for future use.

If you want a fast easy way to create HDR images without having to learn a lot of manual techniques, but yet still have full control over the images that are created, then HDR Efex Pro is the product for you.

HDR Efex Pro Mac/Windows is available at an educational discount price of $79.99
