Content Creation: 3D Modeling and Rendering Benchmarks

Now we turn to performance using actual working applications. We’ll take a look at a pair of popular 3D modeling and rendering tools: 3ds Max 8 and LightWave 9. We use 3ds Max 8 when we run the SPEC APC test, but use the newer 3ds Max 9 to test rendering performance.

Creating Photo Animation with Toon Boom Studio

Many animators have a dream of one day starring in their own movies. With Toon Boom Studio, animating a picture of yourself or any other bitmap image is now possible.

Preparing the pictures

It all starts with that single click when you take a picture that you want to animate. The process is simple, as you take you picture try to figure out what kind of movements you’ll perform in your story. Take as many photos as you need. For example, if you wish to have a talking character, you can create different head expressions.

image005.jpg

Once your pictures are taken, you have two choices:

  • Importing the images directly to Toon Boom Studio
  • Retouching them first. If you retouch them, remember to add an Alpha channel around the shapes before saving the files. When vectorized in Toon Boom Studio, the alpha channel will be cropped and your picture will be wrapped around a vector shape automatically for easy animation with the transform tool.

Importing the bitmap images in Toon Boom Studio

In previous versions, Toon Boom Studio only gave you the option of importing and vectorizing images. you can also choose the style of this vectorization.

  1. In the Exposure Sheet or the Timeline, create a new drawing element for each body part you need (For Example: head, body, mouth…)
  2. Select the first frame of an element, right click and choose the option Import and Vectorize > From File Two windows appear.
  3. First, browse to find the image you want to import
  4. Once this is done, locate the Vectorization Type section and select the option With Texture.

This new feature will allow you to retouch imported bitmap images using the Toon Boom Studio drawing tools.

Editing your images directly in Toon Boom Studio

Once your bitmap images are imported, you can now modify them. In this example, we loaded a textured cat.

  1. Using the scissor tool, we removed the right arm of the character. By default, the tool works with a bounding box, but pressing [ALT] will transform it to a lasso scissor. Note that you could also use the cutter tool.
    image006.jpg
  2. After you circle the part, cut and paste it on another element level.
  3. Go back and take a look at the initial image, you’ll see a hole in the middle of your body left by the removed arm. You will need to fill this hole.
    image007.jpg
  4. In the color palette, create a textured color.
  5. Right click in a color pot, then, select Color > Add Texture.
  6. Browse to find the same texture used to create the character. Paint the zone with this color. Also paint the hole left when you removed the arm.
    image008.jpg

Continue the process of copy/pasting other body parts element per element. A little trick: the less body parts you have overlapping each other, the fastest will be the process. This prevents you from having gaps to fill up.

Animating your character

Once all your parts are placed on separated elements, you’ll now have to set the pivot points. Use the rotate tool and move the green circle where you want the rotation to take place. If you wish, you may connect all your elements to a Master Peg. But it is not necessary to add Pegs to all elements since Toon Boom Studio allow you to create keyframes directly in an element layer.

Animating a character made from pictures is not different from moving vector body parts drawn directly in the software.

Animate faster

Of course, bitmap images are heavier than vectors. Depending of the number and the size of the files you import, you may have to deal with some performance issues.

A trick to help you is to go to the Preferences > Display and unselect the Smooth Texture and Bitmaps option. This option only affects real time preview meaning the bitmap images will appear to be more pixilated inside the camera view of Toon Boom Studio but the end result will be the same quality.

Radmin 3.1 – Fast and Secure Remote Access for Windows Vista

I’ve been using Timbuktu Pro for many years, but with the purchase of a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium, I found that I couldn’t get Timbuktu Pro to work on the new machine. I tried out RealVNC, but the speed was very slow. I found about Radmin 3.1 after doing some more research, and after a quick install and setup, I was very impressed by its performance. According to famatech, the manufacturer of Radmin:

Radmin is the fastest remote control software available anywhere. Its new DirectScreenTransfer™ technology uses a video hook kernel mode driver to boost the capture rate to hundreds of screen updates per second. Its special low-bandwidth optimizations lets you work comfortably even on dial-up modem and GPRS connections.

In the past when I used Timbuktu Pro at home via a cable modem connection to tie into a computer on a T1 connection at work, there was a noticeable lag in connecting and moving around the screen on the remote computer. With Radmin, both the initial connection and the performance of activities on the remote computer are much faster.

Another great thing about Radmin is its security. For the user authentication and session key setup modified Diffie-Hellman exchange with 2048 bit key size is used. For data stream encryption Radmin uses AES with 256 bit key size. Radmin generates unique 256 bit keys for each connection that achieves unsurpassed protection.

Radmin also only charges for only the computer(s) that are being controlled. The remote client is a free download, so if you only need to control one computer, but you need to access it from multiple clients, you only have to pay for one seat.

If you need remote access to a Windows PC, I would definitely suggest trying out the free demo of Radmin, especially if you’re using Windows Vista since Radmin fully supports Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit, but the Radmin Server also works with Windows XP/2003/2000 (32-bit). Radmin Viewer 3.1 supports Windows Vista/XP/2003/2000/ME/98/95/NT4.0 (32-bit) and Windows Vista/XP/2003 (64-bit) operating systems.

Radmin is available at an academic discount price of $33 which is $16 less than the normal retail price of $49.

Radmin academic volume licensing is also available starting with a 50-pack for $994.

How Manga Conquered the U.S., a Graphic Guide to Japan’s Coolest Export

How Manga Conquered the U.S., a Graphic Guide to Japan’s Coolest Export

Welcome to Wired’s visual history of manga in America! We decided that the best way to explain the increasing popularity of this exciting medium was to to tell the story in the form of a manga. Like many of the popular manga that have been translated into English, we are using the Japanese page and panel order. Japanese writing reads from right to left, so pages and panels are sequenced in what seems like reverse order to Western readers. Start on the righthand page below and start reading “backward.” When you’re done with these pages, click the upper left corner to flip to the next page. You’ll soon get the hang of it!
