MacBook Air: First Lab Tests
For this first set of tests, we used a default-configuration MacBook Air powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 4200 rpm, 1.8-inch 80GB parallel ATA hard drive. The MacBook Air’s processor clock speed lags well behind current MacBook (2.0GHz or 2.2GHz) and MacBook Pro (2.2GHz, 2.4GHz, and 2.6GHz) models, and its hard drive is also slower than those used in the other models.
Our tests reveal that the slower processor and disk make the MacBook Air quite a bit slower than the other portables in Apple’s product line. The MacBook Air was also outpaced in our tests by the its closest desktop cousin, the ultra-compact 1.83GHz Mac mini Core 2 Duo.
Photoshop CS3 and Cinema 4D R10.5 are benchmarked on the MacBook Air.

Creating Panoramic Images in Photoshop CS3 using Auto-Align Layers
One place we went to that blew me right away was Sun Studios, in downtown Memphis. Sun Studios has seen artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and more recently, U2 pass through their doors, and when my wife, mother-in-law and I were standing in the recording studio, I thought to myself, “I have got to get a picture of this” Well, my little digital camera definitely does not have a lens wide enough to capture the entire studio, so I took three separate pictures, and I figured that I would just put them together in Photoshop to create a panoramic picture. Below are the pictures I took inside Sun Studios.

Corel Painter X
The Professional Photographer Hot One Awards provide the magazine’s readership with a definitive list of the newest, hottest, most innovative products available. Each year, Professional Photographer editors oversee a submission and judging process that calls on companies in all subfields of the photography industry. For the 2008 awards, a panel of 18 judges voted on products that ranged from digital cameras to inkjet printers to educational resources.
“We are thrilled that Corel Painter X continues to be recognized by the photography community carrying on the tradition of quality, innovation, and power established by previous versions of Painter,” said Rob MacDonald, Product Manager, Corel Painter. “Working closely with our users, we continue to introduce innovations like the Real Bristle Painting System and Photo-Painting Palettes to help professional photographers explore new, creative opportunities as they transform images into custom painted creations.”
The RealBristle Painting System and Photo-Painting Palettes represent a major leap forward in blurring the line between traditional and digital art like never before. When selected, RealBristle brushes faithfully replicate natural art media right down to the individual brush strokes. For photographers who want to experiment with different artistic effects, Painter’s Photo-Painting Palettes allow them to apply a variety of artistic styles to an image – including Impressionist, Classical, Modern, Watercolor, Sketchbook and Chalk Drawing – without ever having to put stylus to painting tablet. Painter’s Smart Stroke Painting system automatically adjusts brush size, stroke length and pressure based on the detail and focal areas of the original image to provide users with original works of art in just minutes.
PC World’s Techlog Wacom’s Cheap, Sleek New Cintiq Tablet
One of my favorite products from the Consumer Electronics Show was actually released last month. But it’s still pretty new and exceptionally cool: Wacom’s Cintiq 12WX pen display, a PC peripheral that lets you draw directly on the screen with a pressure-sensitive pen.Cintiqs have been around for a long time, and have been one of the best digital tools an artist could have–they replicate the natural feel of working with pen and paper in a way that no other input device can.
But they’ve been pricey–two grand and above–and big, bulky beasts that needed lots of room. (I have the 21ux model and love it, but it occupies an entire small desk all by itself.)
At $999, the 12UX is half the price of any previous Cintiq, making it a plausible purchase for a lot more serious amateur artists. But the price is less interesting than the tablet’s design, which bears little resemblance to any previous Cintiq. It’s the first Cintiq you’d describe as sleek–it’s .67″ thick, compared to 1.8″ for the 21UX model. Actually, in terms of form factor, it looks more like Wacom’s Intuos tablets, which don’t have displays, than the other Cintiqs.
How to Recreate Depth of Field in 7 Steps [Post-Production]
The following article on creating depth of field using photoshop was submitted by Emma Cake from Big Bouquet Photography. If you didn’t quite get your aperture settings right when you were out and about with your camera it’s possible to recreate a depth of field effect in Photoshop.
Similarly if you want to heighten the either of depth of field in your photography you can use Photoshop to do that too. Depth of field allows you to draw attention to an element in your photograph.
With some quick tweaks to your image’s sharpness using Photoshop’s filters and Layer Masking you can easily recreate the look of a small depth of field.
